A Procrastinators Manifesto and assorted bits

by Grant, a Patriot Blogger

As you have probably noticed by the lack of consistency in posts, I am a heavy procrastinator.  This can cause problems and often does.  In the past couple of weeks, I have had multiple papers and assignments due and my procrastination has not helped.  It is super easy to procrastinate in college.  Mom isn’t looking over your shoulder and so it all comes down to you. How dedicated are you to perusing your school work when it means missing out on fun?  My uncle once told me “never let your school work get in the way of your social life.”  I have apparently really taken this to heart.  Everything seems to get in the way of doing my school work.   Whether it is just hanging out with friends or playing video games, distractions just seem to come up everywhere.  The worse problem is that I have a hard time saying no to people.  As you know, I am involved in like 90 million things on campus and they never seem to slow down.  It makes it super easy to move away from school work and my other responsibilities. I am trying to find inspiration in the words of one my high school teachers.  He said that whether you go to Harvard or a community college, you can get a good education by working hard.  So I am trying to extra effort now that finals are upon us.

So as for some of the things that have been going on in my life in the past couple of weeks.  Ultimate is over for the year. Thank the lord! It was so cold at the one tournament I could make it out to that I had to wear two shirts, long socks, gloves and a hat during play.  Being from the south (Carolina lovin!) I can’t stand that cold.  So, when the weather at Mason hits I stop feeling the energy to do anything.  But there is one good thing about the weather changing.  BASKETBALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!! I love Mason Basketball so much.  Of course, being part of the green machine (the pep band here) makes the games all the more exciting.  Especially because now we got sousaphones and the sound is huge.  At the moment we are 6-2 which isn’t too shabby.  I am excited and worried all at the same time.  We have had three games go to overtime and my heart just can’t take it anymore.  Maybe it is all the burger king and the lack of exercise but the teams play has been giving me a heart attack.  I would suggest coming up for a game though just because the whole community at Mason is involved and it is really a sight to see.  To be honest, I didn’t really like basketball all that much until I got here but Mason Madness is contagious.

The fraternity really got busy this week.  We had an event almost everyday in preparation for initiating six new brothers! It is an exciting time and of course I can’t tell you much about it but fraternity is an amazing experience.  Don’t just look at it and say that all greek life is drinking and parties because it isn’t.  Really it is all about finding your right organization.  Whether it is service based or social there are a lot of options and each one is different.    For me it has been such a great experience and I can’t wait to call six new men, ‘brothers.’

On the other hand, after today I will live with all brothers.  My roommate will be initiated and my suitemates are already brothers.  I love them to death and it is great that we can spend more time together but our room is a wreck.  Especially on days when there is a fraternity event.  There are dishes from two weeks ago and the bathroom is starting to get a little gross.  It never gets bad enough where we have to fight about it but it is always there.  Maybe this is yet another case of procrastination.   I’ll stop here now that we have finally caught up and next blog will be about study abroad.  Good night and Go Mason.
